OVWA Quarterly Membership Training: The Forensic Nurse's Role in Caring for Victims of Violence


Please join Laura Kaiser, Executive Director, and Ruth Downing,  Director of Project Development for the Forensic Nursing Network Inc., will present on the important role of a Forensic Nurse and how this specialized medical profession serves and cares for victims of violent crime. You will learn an overview of  forensic nursing, the intersection of forensic nursing with non-fatal strangulation, human trafficking and sexual assault survivors, and in depth information about caring for the survivors of these serious crimes. 

Laura Kaiser, RN, BSN, SANE-A
Laura Kaiser is currently the Executive Director for Forensic Nursing Network, Inc. a nonprofit organization. Laura has completed Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training for pediatrics, adolescent and adults in both military and general populations. She’s practiced as a forensic nurse for over fifteen years. Laura’s received national certification as a sexual assault nurse examiner for the adult/adolescent population. She’s restructured and managed a large six-facility forensic program in central Ohio. She's trained others in forensics and sexual assault in both didactic and clinical simulation settings. These published trainings include advocates, nurses and physicians throughout the United States. Laura has served as past President and past Treasurer for the International Association of Forensic Nurses- Ohio Chapter. She currently sits on the Sexual Assault Advisory Board for Ohio. She has presented at numerous local and international conferences on multiple forensic topics including Human Trafficking, Sexual Assault, and other forms of intentional violence.

Ruth Downing MSN RN CNP SANE-A
Ruth is currently a family nurse practitioner in an Urgent Care setting. She has been a registered nurse for over 40 years, and a forensic nurse since 1999. Ruth has been active in county, state, and national efforts addressing violence in our communities. She founded Forensic Healthcare Consulting in 2007, and has provided education and consulting services for health care, law enforcement and legal professionals nationally, and for national leaders in Peru.
Ruth initiated and directed a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program for seven years. She is an active member of the Ohio Chapter of the International Association of Forensic Nurses, serving as President in 2008. She is also a member of the Advisory Team for the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention at the Family Justice Center Alliance in San Diego, the Ohio Family Violence Prevention Center Advisory Council, and the Ohio Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review Board. She is a member of the Central Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition and a founding member of the Delaware County Against Human Trafficking Coalition, for which she coordinates the health care response for trafficking survivors.
Ruth has collaborated with other forensic nurses to form Forensic Nursing Network Inc, a nonprofit corporation, to broaden the scope of education for healthcare professionals and mentor forensic nurses in rural areas of Ohio.
