PROTECTING THE UNPROTECTED The Ohio Attorney General’s Elder Financial Exploitation Symposium

The Symposium will address the warning signs of elder financial exploitation and financial crimes. We will explore civil and criminal legal interventions and provide attendees with hands-on tools and strategies to assist victims of financial exploitation. The United States Department of Justice reports that older adults lose more than 2.9 billion dollars annually from financial exploitation. Financial exploitation takes many forms. While the vast majority of reported occurrences to law enforcement and APS involve perpetrators who are related to, or in a trusting relationship with the victim, scams and frauds by strangers are also very common. This symposium will examine risk factors, the complexities of capacity and subsequent risk of financial exploitation, affecting older adults and individuals with diminished capacity
